How to Get a House in Whiterun

An easy way to get Breezehome is to complete the quest “Bleak Falls Barrow”. This quest will appear immediately after "Before the Storm". 

The quest “Bleak Falls Barrow” can be obtained from Farengar Secret-Fire in Dragonsreach and can be found by simply following the path from the entrance that leads to the cloud district until you reach a long staircase with a set of doors at the top.

After you get this quest, go to Bleak Falls Barrow which is south of Whiterun and west of Riverwood. 

Then go inside the ruins and you will find a group of pillars which you have to arrange to be “snake”, “snake”, “whale”, and this will allow you to pull a lever to continue your journey. 

After that you will meet Arvel the Swift who is trapped in a spider's web and free him from the spider's web. Then you have to kill him to get the Golden Claw.

After completing the mission, return to Dragonsreach and talk to Jarl Balgruuf.

You will receive the Breezehome key and the house can be found right next to the Warmaiden's near the gate in Whiterun.

How to Get a House in Whiterun for Free?

To get Breezehome for free, first you have to have enough gold to buy Breezehome, namely 5000 gold. 

This aims to trigger a purchasing dialogue with Proventus. Once you have enough gold to pay for the house, players must talk to Proventus Avenicci.

Proventus bedrooms is the place to get houses in whiterun for free. 

When you're in the room, set the wait timer to around 11pm and catch Proventus as he makes his way to his bed, and make sure you're near one of his wardrobes. 

Before you talk to Proventus about purchasing, be sure to save the game first in case you miss this opportunity.

Talk to him after you save, buy Breezehome, close the conversation immediately, and before he takes your gold, open one of the storage containers nearby, then store all your gold there.
