5 Anime Lists That Are Banned for Children, Adults Only

Nowadays, many children are being shown anime by their parents, but actually there are anime that are forbidden for children.

The age rating and story of an anime should always be taken into account, because there are some anime that contain elements of violence, sexuality, coarse language or more complex adult themes.

In Indonesia, films are classified by age, such as SU, R13+, D17+, and D21+. Meanwhile, streaming platforms also have age restrictions based on content.

Anime that is prohibited for children refers more to shows that are not suitable for children because they have adult themes and scenes that are quite heavy for children.

So it is very important, especially for adults or parents, to choose anime that is safe for children to watch and avoid anime that is strictly prohibited for children by checking the age rating and content.

Anime That is Banned for Kids

Anime that is banned for kid is an anime that has an adult rating or content so it is not suitable for children, especially those under 13 years old.

Usually this anime has elements of violence, sexuality, coarse language, heavy psychological content, social issues or adult themes that are more complex and easier for teenage or adult audiences to understand.

In fact, anime itself has a wider target audience so not all anime is suitable for children.

The characteristics of this anime which is prohibited for children can be seen from the theme, story content and genre which displays violence, gore, psychology, horror, crime, dark fantasy, war, and social issues. Some also feature sexual elements and fan service.

Its uniqueness is that the story is too difficult for children to understand with a complex story, the characters lack morals and the ending is simple.

The goal remains to entertain, convey social criticism, understand character psychology or discuss certain issues with the audience.  

List of Anime That Are Banned for Children

Below is a list of anime that are prohibited for children, namely:

Tokyo Ghoul

The first anime that is banned for children is “Tokyo Ghoul”, an anime adapted from the dark fantasy manga by Sui Ishida, produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Shūhei Morita.

Tokyo Ghoul (Season 1) aired on July 4 – September 19, 2014 with 12 episodes, Tokyo Ghoul √A (Season 2) aired on January 9 – March 27, 2015 with 12 episodes.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Ghoul: re is divided into 2 cours, namely the first cour (Tokyo Ghoul Season 3) aired on April 3 – June 19, 2019 with 12 episodes and cour 2 (Tokyo Ghoul Season 4) aired on October 9 – December 25, 2018 with 12 episodes.

The main genres are Dark Fantasy, Supernatural Thriller, Action, Fantasy, Horror, Suspense with Gore, Psychological and Urban Fantasy themes which are available on Crunchyroll, iQIYI and Netflix.  

In Tokyo Ghoul (Season 1) tells the story of Ken Kaneki, a student who experiences a scary incident after meeting Rize Kamishiro.

Then he became half human and ghoul, as a creature that preys on humans to live and is forced to adapt to the ghoul world.

In Tokyo Ghoul √A (Season 2), he gets involved with Aogiri Tree, while the problems between ghouls and the CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul) get worse.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo Ghoul:re Part 1 (Season 3), Haise Sasaki and the Quinx Squad are shown as artificial humans fighting ghouls. Gradually, Haise Sasaki's identity is revealed, including his relationship with Ken Kaneki.

And in Tokyo Ghoul:re Part 2 (Season 4), the major conflict between humans and ghouls continues. This season marks the final season of Tokyo Ghoul, with no follow-up.

Banana Fish

The second anime that is prohibited for children is "Banana Fish", an anime adapted from the manga by Akimi Yoshida, produced by Studio MAPPA and directed by Hiroko Utsumi.

Banana Fish was produced as a project to commemorate Akimi Yoshida's 40th anniversary as a manga artist. The anime aired from July 5 to December 20, 2018, with a total of 24 episodes.

The main genres are Action, Adventure, Drama, Suspense with Delinquents, Organized Crime and Psychological themes available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

This anime tells the story of Ash Lynx, a 17-year-old teenager who becomes the leader of a street gang in New York.

His life changed after learning about “Banana Fish” which is related to a mysterious drug and his older brother, Griffin.

While investigating this, he met Eiji Okumura, a Japanese photographer who worked as a photographer's assistant in the United States.

An unfortunate fate befell them, which made them involved in conflicts with gangsters, drugs and conspiracies.

Prison School

The third anime that is prohibited for children is “Prison School”, an anime adapted from the manga by Akira Hiramoto, produced by JC Staff and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima.

Prison School aired on July 11 – September 26, 2015 with a total of 12 episodes and an OVA (Original Video Animation) entitled “Mad Wax” which aired on March 4, 2016.

The main genres are Sex-Comedy, Ecchi with Gag Humor and School themes which are available on Crunchyroll, Google Play or AppleTV.

The story focuses on Kiyoshi Fujino and four students named Takehito Morohuzu (Gakuto), Shingo Wakamoto, Reiji Andou (Andre) and Jouzi Neizu (Joe) as the first group of boys accepted into Hachimitsu Private Academy which previously accepted female students.

The problem is that this group carried out an act of bathing female students which was finally discovered by the Underground Student Council.

As a result, they were thrown into school detention for a month. They then planned to escape, carry out their punishment, and continue causing chaos at school.

Boku no Pico

The fourth anime that is prohibited for children is “Boku no Pico” which is an adult OVA (Original Video Animation) produced by Natural High and directed by Katsuyoshi Yatabe.

Boku no Pico (Part 1) aired on September 7, 2006 with 1 episode, then Pico to Chico (Part 2) aired on April 19, 2007 with 1 episode and Pico x CoCo x Chico (Part 3) aired on October 9, 2008 with 1 episode.

The main genres are Boys Love and Hentai which are released as Adult Videos (Adult OVA) so they cannot be watched on streaming platforms.

The story focuses on Pico, a feminine-looking boy, and a man named Tamotsu. Their encounter turns into a sexual relationship.

In subsequent OVAs, other characters are introduced while continuing the same sexual theme.

Death Note

The last anime that is banned for children is “Death Note,” an anime adapted from the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, produced by Madhouse and directed by Tetsurō Araki.

Even though Death Note only has 1 season, it has 2 parts in 1 season with a total of 37 episodes in total.

Death Note: Part 1 aired from October 21, 2007 to April 20, 2008, with 26 episodes. Death Note: Part 2 aired from April 27 to July 6, 2008, with a total of 11 episodes.

In addition, Death Note also has two special episodes, namely Death Note Relight: Visions of a God, which aired on August 31, 2007, and Relight 2: L's Successor, which aired on August 22, 2008.

The main genres are Mystery, Psychological Thriller, Supernatural Thriller, Suspense, Adult, Crime, Dark Fantasy, Police Procedural with Psychological themes available on Netflix, Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

The story focuses on Light Yagami, a genius high school student who discovers a mysterious book called the 'Death Note'. The book has a terrifying rule: anyone whose name is written inside will die.

The original owner of this book was Ryuk, who accidentally dropped it into the human world. Light Yagami uses the book's power to kill criminals and protect the world from evil.

The numerous deaths of these criminals led the police and the public to become aware of a mysterious figure known as 'Kira'. Then, a genius detective named L began hunting Kira.

The story shifts focus to Light and L, then there is a new character named Misa Amane, another Shinigami and other groups involved in the Kira case.

After the great Kira conflict, L's successors, including Near and Mello, were introduced, Kira's identity was revealed, and Light was stopped. Finally, this conflict ended in Episode 37.

The two Special Episodes only summarize the entire anime story with several additional scenes that are not in the anime.
