Ryo Yamada first appeared in manga Volume #1 and Chapter #1 as well as in anime Episode #1 titled 'Lonely Rolling Bocchi'.

In the story of Bocchi the Rock!, besides being a high school student, she also works part-time at a music venue called STARRY with Nijika Ijichi.

In the flashback, Ryo Yamada has loved rock music since childhood and was in another band before Kessoku Band. However, he decided to leave due to differing opinions on music.

After leaving his old band, he and Nijika Ijichi formed a new band called Kessoku Band.

In Kessoku Band, Ryo Yamada is the Bassist, Sub-Vocalist, Composer and also the one who directs the band's music, having a lot of understanding about music so he can create a song.

Even though from the outside he looks like a bassist, Ryo Yamada actually plays a very important role in Kessoku Band, especially in creating music.  

He also lives with his wealthy parents, but he himself never has any money because he always spends his money in an instant to buy musical instruments.

Ryo Yamada's last name was inspired by Takahiro Yamada, a bassist from the band ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION.
