This technique was first mentioned in the fight between Luffy and Blueno and was first used to destroy an iron door in the Enies lobby.

Unfortunately, the first use of this technique was not shown to the audience. When Luffy destroyed the iron door, the area around him was immediately covered in dust.

After the dust clears, Chimney and Gonbe are seen staring at the large hole in the door in awe. Even more shocked, they found Luffy's body had shrunk.

The Gear 3 technique was first fully seen during the fight between Luffy and Rob Lucci.

How does Luffy use this technique? Luffy will plug his mouth using his thumb, he then bites the joint of his finger until a small hole forms.

After that he will blow air strongly into his bones until his arms expand. He can send air to all parts of his body with this technique.

By doing this, Luffy can add weight to his arms and use them to powerfully attack larger areas. As a side effect, it will be difficult for Luffy to move freely.

After the Timeskip, Luffy became more skilled in mastering Gear 2 and Gear 3 techniques. Where the side effects of using Gear 3 are more controllable.
