Psyonix Is the Birthplace of Esports Rocket League

The main and almost only protagonist in organization Rocket League tournaments is Psyonix. The company developed the game and released it in 2015, and now it is developing the esports stage of the discipline single-handedly.

At the dawn of esports Rocket League held championships supported by third party companies and even more frequently those were regular enthusiasts who liked the game at the junction of a MOBA and an arcade racing game.

Seeing the potential of their baby in the vast competitive sphere, Psyonix started to take an active part in creating an esports ecosystem and forming Rocket League timetables in the months and years ahead.

It evolved into RLCS – a league that became the main tournament track in Rocket League. The first pro matches of the RLCS took place in 2016.

Initially RLCS was a kind of a local championship with battles happening in two regions: Europe and North America. Later the RLCS structure expanded and invited teams from different regions in the middle of the league: Oceania, South America, Middle East and North America, North Pacific region, South Pacific region and Tropical Africa.

Each championship was divided into several splits (autumn, winter and spring) similar to League of Legends. Another distinctive feature of the competitive structure of RLCS is considered to be the unique approach to conducting each “half-year”. For example, the autumn split was played by the Swiss bracket system, winter – Round-Robin, and spring – double elimination.

This diversity and ingenuity speak in favor of Psyonix. Even though the company has monopolized the market of broadcasting esports events in Rocket League, it does not ignore the audience’s demand for uniqueness of championships and entire series.

What Are Other Tournament Organizers in Rocket League?

However, it does not mean that apart from Psyonix there is not anyone else in the discipline. Some companies and clubs conduct their own tournaments in the game filling the Rocket League with additional events on breaks between the main stages in RLCS.

External TOs include the following companies: Rocket Baguette, Flashes of Brilliance, WePlay Esports and ESL. All of them conduct local championships even though the latter were trying to hook on something bigger.

The peak of organizing talents of ESL Rocket League happened at Gamers8 2022. The tournament was organized by the German studio in Riyadh where they gave teams a chance to compete for almost 2,000,000 dollars.

As for the amount of grabs, Gamers8 was inferior to only worldwide championships of the RLCS level. Continuation of the Gamers8 series is planned in July 2023, and ESL will again be in charge of organizing the event.
