How to Beat Khotun Khan in Ghost of Tsushima

To defeat Khan in Ghost of Tsushima, you need to know how to defeat him in one-on-one duels, as well as as part of a larger group.

Because Khan will fight you in both ways with different rules each time. 

Khotun Khan Phase One: Duel at Izumi Bay

Your first fight against Khan is a straight-up duel where he uses a large spear designed to knock you down every time it is swung. 

Here are some tricks to deal with it at this stage:

Khan uses wide, swinging attacks, most of which are difficult to parry and must be avoided by escaping.

To counter this, both Wind Stance and Moon Stance are good choices, although we think Wind Stance is better. However, if you've already significantly improved Moon Stance and don't have any Wind Stance techniques, it's best to stick with Moon Stance. Try both and see which one suits you best.

Khotun Khan has excellent shock resistance when facing heavy attacks, though this doesn't apply to parries. If you can time your parry perfectly, you can break his defense and help stagger him completely.

Some of Khan's attacks can be stopped by launching a quick attack as he prepares to strike.

If you get too close, Khan will attack you with a very fast hilt strike or spin his halberd while retreating. This second attack is unblockable and difficult to avoid, so move forward quickly to attack and then retreat again before he tries to chase you away.

When he does an unblockable full arc attack around him with the spear, he will follow it up with at least two more unblockable swings that carry him forward on his own momentum, 

As Khan spins his spear in a swift motion, he prepares for a powerful overhead attack that actually does little area damage. This attack is extremely difficult to dodge, and your best chance of success is to roll straight backward.

Once you defeat him, Khan will flee back to his warship, sending soldiers to protect his escape. 

Here you have to get past the soldiers and get to the ship to face them again.

Khotun Khan Phase Two: Battle of the Warships

This time, Khan will fight you as one of many enemies. While this means it's easier to get overwhelmed, it also has its advantages, as it unlocks Ghost Weapons for use and allows for more options.

Khan will start with all the same moves as before, but now he has no visible health bar. He will also continuously summon enemies.

You can use enemies to gain willpower to heal yourself and increase the power of special moves. If you're in danger, Dance of Fury can effectively clear the surrounding area.

There will be archers on both sides shooting at you. Take your time returning fire, as defending yourself from multiple positions is no easy feat. Also, take advantage of your surroundings to gain as much cover as possible.

Learn how to quickly switch stances mid-fight, if you haven't already. You can still use Wind or Moon Stance on him for now, but be sure to pay attention to other enemies and quickly switch stances to best engage and eliminate them.

You can also use stealth tactics, though it's very difficult to get cover without smoke bombs to hide yourself. You also can't use stealth or premeditated assassinations on Khotun Khan, although sneaking up behind him can deliver a surefire hit.

Make the most of your Ghost Weapons on Khotun Khan. Kunai, Sticky Bombs, and the Way of the Flame can break down Khan's defenses, allowing you to land powerful follow-up attacks or quickly reduce the enemy's numbers.

After dealing enough damage, Khan will retreat, and you'll be prompted to press the triangle button next to him. Press this button to perform a special attack that will deflect his spear and force him to switch to sword and shield.

From this point on, all the same rules apply, but you must be in Water Stance to fight him. Khan here has all the same moves as a standard shield-wielding captain, so the worst move to watch out for here is his fast, completely unblockable shield attack.

After you defeat Khan in shield mode, he will stagger back, and a hint for the triangle button will appear above his head. 

Run towards him and press repeatedly to disarm him and deliver a deadly attack that will win the fight.

Killing Khan will conclude Eternal Blue Sky Tale and bring us closer to the end of the game. Once the mission is complete, you can also go to one of the Reward Altars to obtain the Kijin Blood Mask.
