For beginners, the order in which to watch the Fate series can be quite confusing. This is because the series has many titles with different plots and settings.

There are dozens of anime, manga, games, to light novels which uses the name Fate in their title, making it seem even more complex.

Even though it looks complicated, once you understand the basic story of the Fate Series, it will be easier for you to know the order in which to watch it.

Fate Series Anime Watch Order Guide

For those of you who don't know, the Fate series is a work by TYPE-MOON whose initial format was a visual novel with the title Fate/stay night.

Although there are many opinions about the order in which you should watch the anime, in general you can start watching from Fate/stay night which was produced in 2006.

This series adapts many of the story lines from the visual novel. While not perfect, it's the only anime to adapt many key moments, including Saber's character arc.

Fate/stay night (2006)

A perfect starter for beginners, Fate/stay night will introduce you to the basic story and common terms in the anime, such as Master and Servant.

Follows the story of Shirou Emiya who finds himself caught in the middle of a battle between two superhumans known as Servants.

He then has to participate in the Fifth Holy Grail War, a life-and-death war that offers an extraordinary prize, the Holy Grail that can grant everything.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014-2015)

Next up is Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. This anime follows the second route of the visual novel.

Focusing on Rin Tohsaka, one of Shirou Emiya's classmates. Fate brings the two together in an event where they both fight for the Holy Grail.

After learning that they have the same goal, the two then decide to become temporary allies to face other opponents in the Holy Grail War.

Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] I. presage flower (2017)

Heaven's Feel is a movie trilogy adapting the third and final route of the visual novel. Here, Shirou Emiya must give up his peaceful life when the Holy Grail War breaks out.

The main protagonist in the Heaven's Feel route is Sakura Satou who is also thrown into the middle of the war and meets Shirou.

When they meet again, Shirou's feelings for Sakura actually lead him deeper into uncovering the dark secrets behind the war.

Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] II. lost butterfly (2019)

The second installment of the Heaven's Feel trilogy, this film depicts several important events. It features significant changes from the previous two routes.

Shirou decides who and what he is fighting for, while Masters and Servants begin to disappear one by one due to an evil force roaming Fuyuki City.

Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] III. spring song

The third and final film of the Heaven's Feel route, there are many fight scenes that are not only stunning but also impressive.

The hidden enemy that has been terrorizing Fuyuki City has finally revealed itself. When Shirou, Rin, and Iliasviel von Einzbern learn the truth, the situation has become dire.

In order to protect their loved ones, they must unite to face a seemingly invincible enemy force.

As the final chapter of the chaotic war begins, Shirou begins to face a major dilemma. Will he succeed in saving a world headed for destruction?

Fate/Zero (2011 – 2012)

Series Fate/Zero is a prequel to the events of Fate/stay night. Fate/Zero is divided into two seasons with a total of 25 episodes.

While many may find it okay to watch the prequel before the main series, there are a number of major spoilers from Unlimited Blade Works that are revealed in this prequel.

Fate Series Spin-off Watch Order

The Fate series also released several spin-off titles that you can watch in random order after the main anime series ends.

This is because most of them are unrelated to the main story and are set in different time periods and have different Holy Grail War rules. Here's a list:

Fate/Grand Order Watch Order

Fate/Grand Order is an anime series adapted from a mobile game for iOS and Android. The story follows an organization called the Chaldea Security Organization.

To save humanity, they must identify and prevent the events that could lead to human extinction. Here's the order to watch:
