The core of this character's gameplay can be simplified into 2 aspects, namely Elemental Skill play and Forward Vaporize.

This Elemental Skill changes Mualani's normal attack from ranged to melee, along with its multiplier. Furthermore, this Elemental Skill is also crucial for exploration, especially in the Natlan region.

The second aspect is Forward Vaporize, which is the elemental reaction of Pyro being doused with Hydro. In Genshin Impact, not many characters can intentionally access Forward Vaporize.

Vaporize is generally used more by Pyro characters than Hydro, considering that the Pyro element is weaker than Hydro, so it is easy to keep the Hydro aura on the enemy.

With his gameplay design leaning more towards Forward Vaporize, it means he has the potential to deal very high damage with infrequent frequency.

This is because the application of the Hydro aura is deliberately made slow, to make it easier for players to maintain the Pyro aura on the enemy.

As explained previously, this character has a very different gameplay from other Genshin Impact characters, which focus on speed and massive area attacks:

Elemental Skill: Surfshark Wavebreaker

  • Mualani summons Sharky Surfboard and enters Nightsoul's Blessing state.
  • In this state, he consumes Nightsoul Points and can surf on land, water, or even the molten lava (Liquid Phlogiston) of Natlan.
  • When surfing and hitting enemies, he applies the “Marked as Prey” debuff and gains “Wave Momentum” stacks (maximum 3 stacks).

Normal Attack (While Surfing): Sharky's Surging Bite

  • This is his main source of damage. When he presses Normal Attack while surfing (with or without stacks), he'll unleash a massive Hydro AoE attack.
  • The damage from this attack increases significantly based on the number of Wave Momentum stacks she accumulates. This attack also scales with Mualani's maximum HP.

Element Burst

  • Mualani fires a Super Shark Missile that tracks enemies and deals massive AoE Hydro damage, also scaling with her Max HP.

Weapons

  • Surf's Up: As a Signature Weapon, this weapon is naturally tailor-made for Mualani. It deals CRIT DMG, additional HP, and bonus Normal Attack DMG, specifically tailored for Mualani. The weapon's bonus Normal Attack DMG also enhances the DMG of Mualani's Sharky's Bite Elemental Skill.
  • Tulaytullah's Remembrance: This weapon is suitable for any Catalyst user who plays a lot in Normal Attack.
  • Lost Prayer to the Sacred Winds: This weapon is perfect for Catalyst DPS characters, who benefit greatly from its passive skill and CRIT Rate. It also offers stacked Elemental DMG bonuses and increased movement speed.
  • Ring of Yaxche: The best F2P weapon for Mualani, as she can deal significant damage through her sub-stats and passive. Other HP-scaling characters can also use this.
  • Ash-Graven Drinking Horn: Another F2P weapon that is also suitable for HP-Scaling characters like Mualani.
  • Ballad of the Boundless Blue: A F2P weapon choice suitable for Catalyst DPS who frequently use Normal and Charged Attacks. Each hit increases DMG by a maximum of 3 stacks.

Artifact

  • Obsidian Codex 4-set: Similar to Marechausse Hunter, this set is perfect for on-field characters who utilize Natlan's combat mechanic, Nightsoul Blessing. Mualani, a Hydro on-fielder, is a perfect fit for this set because she uses Nightsoul Blessing when casting her Elemental Skills. Therefore, she needs a high CRIT Rate to ensure her damage output is also devastating.
  • 4-set Heart of Depth: This is a temporary option if you don't have a decent Obsidian Codex set yet.

If you don't have a good set from the two options above, then you can use a 2-set artifact that can give HP% or Hydro DMG%% such as:

  • 2-piece Obsidian Codex: When Mualani is in Nightsoul's Blessing state and on the battlefield, DMG dealt is increased by 15%.
  • 2-piece Heart of Depth: Hydro DMG Bonus +15%
  • 2-piece Nymph's Dream: Hydro DMG Bonus +15%
  • Vourukasha's Glow 2-piece: HP +20%
  • 2-piece Tenacity of the Millelith: HP +20%

Here are the Main Stats and Sub Stats that you should focus on:

  • Sands: HP% or Elemental Mastery
  • Goblet: Hydro DMG Bonus or HP%
  • Circlet: CRIT DMG
  • Sub Stats: CRIT DMG, HP%, Elemental Mastery, CRIT Rate, Energy Recharge

The Best Team for Mualani

Vaporize

When discussing Vaporize, usually Xiangling & Bennett were the top choices for the enabler role. But within Mualani's team, Xiangling faces her own challenges.

Considering Mualani is an HP-based character, Bennett's ATK buffs won't be very useful for her. With Bennett out of the team, Xiangling will need a very high Energy Recharge, potentially reaching 260% or more, to consistently cast Pyronado.

But on the other hand, this challenge opens up opportunities for a number of other Pyro characters with similar abilities, such as Dehya, Thoma, or even Xinyan.

The slow Hydro Mualani app opens up these rarely seen characters into an interesting alternative.

Furthermore, you can fill in the supporting characters according to your needs, for example Furina + 1 healer, Kazuha, Zhongli, or even Yelan.

Yelan's role is more reliable as a buffer, thanks to her passive talent, which increases the active character's damage while Yelan's Elemental Burst is active. She can also activate Hydro Resonance, which grants bonus HP.

Burn Vape

Besides using Pyro characters off-field, there is another way to create a Pyro aura to trigger the Vaporize reaction, namely Burning.

For his team, the most ideal Dendro character to facilitate the Burning reaction is Nahida.

Nahida's Elemental Skill has a very long duration, allowing it to cover an entire rotation. Furthermore, because she can generate a high Dendro aura, the Burning reaction she creates is also durable.

Nahida is also able to provide EM buffs which are very useful for Mualani.

For Pyro characters, you can choose between Xiangling, Dehya, Thoma, or Xinyan. However, Dehya can be the most comfortable character to use, especially in this team, as her Pyro application doesn't rely on energy and her defensive capabilities are reliable.

The rest, you just have to fill in according to the flexible characters you have, such as Kazuha, Zhongli, and Emilie.
