Who is Blackbeard?
It wouldn't feel right to talk about Pirates Blackbeard without also "touching" on the name Marshall D. Teach. Yep, he is the real character who has the nickname Kurohige (Blackbeard).
He is not an ordinary pirate because Oda Sensei gave him a big role in the development of the plot of this series. Kurohige was originally a subordinate of Shirohige (Whitebeard).
But there is a plot twist with a betrayal scheme, he forms his own pirate crew and names it after a "mockery" version of his former boss (read: father).
In fact, it was Blackbeard and his crew who were responsible for Whitebeard's death during the Battle of Marine Ford, the biggest battle Oda Sensei has ever shown in One Piece.
What makes him different from other characters is his personality. Kurohige looks easygoing and likes to laugh. But make no mistake, he is a big-time opportunist who is willing to do anything.
Blackbeard's Power
For strength, there are actually still many of Kurohige's capacities that Oda Sensei has kept secret. So far, the fight scenes involving him have only been shown briefly.
The single most complex battle he ever fought in the series was when he fought Portgas D. Ace, Luffy's "brotherly" older brother and son of the Pirate King.
Taking place over two chapters (440-441), this battle doesn't reveal much. So far, we only know that he is a devil fruit user (DF).
Nicknamed Yami-Yami no Mi (Darkness), this fruit is classified as a Logia fruit. However, unlike other fruits in that category, Yami-Yami is more like a Paramecia.
While Logia power users can generally change their body shape into the element they carry, this fruit does not provide that capacity to its users.
This makes Kurohige still touchable, stabbed, shot, punched, etc. – this makes him more like a Paramecia. But make no mistake, this is also part of his strength.
He is able to neutralize the abilities of other devil fruits, be it Paramecia, Zoan, even Logia though! To be able to do this, it needs to come into contact with the user.
That's why Yami-Yami users need a solid physical form. And just so you know, this capacity is not the main and greatest power of the Dark DF!
Strong Candidates to Become One Piece's Main Antagonists
Continuing the discussion above, it is important to look at the greatest strength of Kurohige's Yami-Yami because it is closely related to his potential as an antagonist.
In Chapter 577, it is seen, in the midst of the Marineford War, how Blackbeard took the opportunity with Whitebeard's body after his death.
With his black cloth covering him, it was not visible what he was doing at that time. But soon, he showed the world: he was able to take Shirohige's power!
Known as the Gura-Gura no Mi (Earthquake), this fruit is the strongest Paramecia in the world. And with the power of Yami-Yami, Kurohige is able to claim that power.
From here Kurohige became the first person in the universe One Piece who can use more than one DF. In fact, he can take the power of DF for others!
