Eighth Generation Console Price War

If we look at current trends, electronic products always follow one formula: the older they are, the lower their price – whether they are used or new.
As we know, advances in the information age have led to rapid device development. More sophisticated lineups appear almost every year.
Something similar is certainly happening in the modern gaming industry. Initially, the same picture was evident. Vendors competed with each other, slashing prices to win over consumers.
This rather bizarre "strategy" was originally Sony's initiative. With the PlayStation (PS) 3 lineup, they were willing to incur losses just to gain an edge over their competitors.
Interestingly, this approach actually worked. For several years, Sony faced no resistance – until its competitors adopted the same strategy.
That's where the price war for low-cost consoles raged. It lasted until the end of the eighth generation of consoles, with the PS4 still holding the upper hand over the Wii U and Xbox One.
The Anomaly of the Modern Gaming Industry

It seems Sony has always wanted to be the leader. After its competitors entered the "meta" they created, they ended up overhauling it.
This coincided with the release of the PS 5. Now, instead of “begging” consumers to buy, Sony put on an arrogant persona: charging a high price under the guise of performance.
Competitors who are not ready for this change then continue to maintain the same strategy. However, this is different from Xbox, Nintendo don't want to just "submit".
Besides keeping console prices low, they also offer something else: innovation! With the Switch, Nintendo is "responding" to the current market trend of mobile-centricity.
This immediately brought them huge success: far surpassing the PS's previous achievements. And by successfully catching up, Nintendo once again followed the PS's strategy.
Feeling "above the clouds," Nintendo dared to set an exorbitant price tag for its Switch 2 lineup. This left Xbox alone with its "outdated" strategy.
Affected by FOMO, Microsoft responded by also raising the prices of its "old" consoles! The difference is, they did this under the guise of tariffs and a price war.
As a result, even the five-year-old, "dusty" Xbox consoles that haven't been sold on store shelves have seen their prices go up! Who knows what was going through the minds of those Microsoft executives...
Xbox Prices to Rise in September 2025

Yes, now it's time to get into the main discussion and certainly the most anticipated, namely the latest Xbox price in September 2025, the official price tag from Microsoft.
Reported from Xbox official page, starting from October 3rd, Microsoft is announcing changes to the recommended retail prices for their various console lineups.
However, so far, this price increase only applies to consoles. Controllers (sticks), headsets, or other official accessories have not increased.
Furthermore, this increase only applies to their country of origin, the United States (US). The price change will exclude sales outside that country.
However, since the Xbox console itself hasn't officially launched in Indonesia yet, this price change could have significant consequences. Here are the latest pricing details:
- Xbox Series S 512 $400 (IDR 6.6 million), up from $380 (IDR 6.3 million)
- Xbox Series S 1TB $450 (IDR 7.5 million), up from $430 (IDR 7.2 million)
- Xbox Series X Digital $600 (IDR 10 million), up from $550 (IDR 9.1 million)
- Xbox Series X $649.99 (IDR 10.8 million), up from $600 (IDR 10 million)
