What is a Router? Here is the Definition, Function, and Type

Disconnection or internet that cannot connect to the device is certainly a big problem. Especially when we are in urgent circumstances and do not have a data package supply.

A router is a network component that has an important function in connecting the internet network to various devices around it.

This component will regulate data traffic and distribute it to other devices such as smartphones, laptops, macbooks and so forth.

How does it work? You can think of this component as an officer who manages the internet network path. Its job is to distribute bandwidth to devices that need access so that the network becomes more optimal.

Apart from being a connector, this component also receives and manages information about the size and type of data that users upload (uploaded) or download (downloads).

The router will also help to filter data obtained from a network (filtration process). With this procedure, the internet network can avoid slow connectivity problems.

Types of Routers

Apart from its main function as a network traffic controller, this thing turns out to not only consist of one type. In general, this device has two types, namely wired and wireless.

In addition to these two variations, there are special types that are commonly used in wider environments and scopes such as companies. Here are some of them.

Core Router

This type usually has a large bandwidth capacity. So, they act as the backbone in the network because they can process and transfer a lot of data.

Due to its high performance, this type is often used to connect devices in a company.

Edge Router

This type can channel data between one or more networks. For example, connecting a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN) with an internet connection.

As the name suggests, these components are located at the edge or boundary of the network. They are usually connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Its main task is to ensure that the user's network connection can connect smoothly without any obstacles to other networks.

Virtual Router

As the name suggests, this type does not have a physical form but comes in a format software. However, this component allows the computer and network to work like a regular router.

Although virtual, they can also share data normally. In addition, its use is also more flexible because it can be developed according to needs.

This type is usually used for companies that use a work from home or WFH system so that the network can run faster.

Difference between Modem and Router

Modem is an abbreviation of Modulator Demodulator, which has the main function of connecting electronic devices to the internet.

This device can receive analog signals obtained from the cable network and process them into digital signals. In digital format, the signal will be stored in the form of binary numbers (0 and 1).

Many people still think that both are the same components. However, it turns out that there are several differences between these two internet delivery devices. What are they?

The first difference lies in the number of ports. Modems generally have fewer ports because they have fewer devices connected.

The second difference is in the IP address. Modems have public IP addresses while routers use private IP addresses (private).

Lastly is the range of its network distribution. Modems use Wide Area Network (WAN) while routers use Local Area Network (LAN).
