The mystery behind Jeki's name change was finally revealed when the dubber and YouTubers Hardi Dian Anto interviews the Indonesian dubber who plays Luffy, Hana Bahagiana.
In the video uploaded on December 31, 2020, Hana initially told the story of her career as a voice actor for cartoons and anime.
Hana Bahagiana herself is known for her role as a dubber. Naruto Uzumaki. In addition, he has also been involved in other anime series such as playing Hachi in Honey Bee Hutch, Hyuga in Captain Tsubasa, and others.
Hana also dubbed the character Luffy in the anime One Piece before being replaced after a few episodes.
Hana explained that the reason for changing Luffy's voice was because there was a change in the dubbing studio that was working on the One Piece dubbing.
Then in the video, Hardi then asks about a mystery that has long been unanswered, namely about the change in the names of anime characters when dubbed into Indonesian.
He used the example of Shanks' name changing to Jeki. "It needs to be clarified, oh my God, it was only realized after many protested," Hana said, laughing.
"At that time I (worked in the studio) around 1-2 am. At 1 am in a sleepy state, usually when I dub, I discuss with the PD or operator. The condition is already tired, exhausted, the operator is the same, we don't check the script," explained Hana.
"Finally it was mentioned, 'Why from Shanks to Jeki? Jeki!!' From there I realized, masyaallah, it turned out to be wrong," he continued. "In the script it was written Jeki, so that's the classification."
Please note, in previous episodes Shanks' name was indeed referred to as Shanks.
So both Hana and Hardi concluded that Jeki's name appeared and got through because the dubber and the operator were both sleepy.
