Right at the peak of the anniversary celebrations that have touched three decades, Nintendo as developers The game has finally officially released a video trailer that confirms all the rumors.
In fact, the news of Pokemon Winds and Waves, which had been leaked since late 2025, is actually releasing! This is a breath of fresh air for the entire fanbase. Pokémon out there.
Besides being supported by a more powerful engine, its performance is also much more optimal considering that this will be an exclusive title for Nintendo's newest platform, namely the Switch 2.
Of the various aspects featured in the video trailer, one that became a “hot” topic among the community was the introduction of a new set (three) of starters!
Starters from Time to Time
Before getting into the main discussion about the starters, it would be good to first discuss the development of Pokemon starters from generation to generation.
That way, all Vicigers (both veterans and non-veterans) can better understand the differences and added value of the Pokemon Winds and Waves starter set.
As has become a tradition over time, each generation of Pokemon in the main series will always introduce a new starter set consisting of three different types.
However, there's one particular pattern that developers often employ for starters. This pattern is well-known among fans and is a source of entertainment to guess:
- Each starter set will always consist of three “basic” types, namely Fire with a dominant orange/red/yellowish Pokemon color; Water with blue/indigo skin/fur, and; Grass with a greenish/brown body color.
- Fire Starters would be shaped like the animals representing the Chinese Zodiac. This pattern was discontinued in Generation 9 with the arrival of Fuecoco.
- Plant/Grass starters would have prehistoric/dinosaur-like shapes. This pattern was disbanded in Generation 6 with the introduction of Chespin.
- Water starters will resemble aquatic creatures. So far, all water starters have followed this pattern.
The existence of theories like these is what sometimes makes a game exciting. So, what about the starter Pokemon Winds and Waves?
Pokemon Winds and Waves starter
Now we move on to the main discussion, the Winds and Waves starter Pokemon. As mentioned above, there are three similar starter types appearing:
- The Fire-type starter Pombon looks like a puppy. It stands 40 cm tall and weighs 6.7 kg. Its innate ability is Blaze. Upon further investigation, it turns out to be similar to the Pomeranian: a small breed of dog often kept as pets by socialite women. It's similar to the fox-type Fennekin;
- The Plant/Grass Type Browt starter is a bird. It stands 30 cm tall and weighs 3.5 kg. Its innate ability is Overgrow. At first glance, it looks like a chick (like Torchic, the Fire Starter, a type of chicken from Hoenn), but it is also possible that it can evolve into another type of bird;
- Gecqua is a Water-type starter with a lizard-like appearance. It stands 30 cm tall and weighs 4.3 kg. Its innate ability is Torrent. As its name suggests, Gecqua is a gecko (its habitat fits this generation's region, which is inspired by the equatorial tropical archipelago). So, with Gecqua's presence, the Water Starter pattern of being filled with aquatic animals will be broken.
So far, there's no additional information regarding further evolutions, training capacity, breeding information, or base stats. So, we'll just have to wait for the next release.
