Armored Mewtwo

The first rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go is Armored Mewtwo. Mewtwo itself is known as one of the strongest and most difficult Psychic Pokémon to catch in Pokémon GO.
But there's a much more exclusive version: Armored Mewtwo. This Pokémon first appeared in a special raid in 2019 and returned in February 2020 to celebrate Pokémon Day.
Since then, Armored Mewtwo hasn't returned to the game. So if you see someone with one, they likely got it from an old event or a trade.
What makes it even more special is that, despite being a costume Pokémon, Armored Mewtwo has a different moveset and stats than regular Mewtwo.
Clone Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Pikachu

Who doesn't know the starter Pokémon from the first generation? Well, the clone versions of Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and... Pikachu These are truly a collector's treasure. Unfortunately, they were only released once, during Pokémon Day 2020, coinciding with the Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution film.
Since then, these Clone Pokémon haven't returned. So, the only way to obtain them now is through trading. Many hoped Niantic would re-release them for a major event like Pokémon's 30th anniversary, but so far there's been no sign of that.
Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf

The Lake Guardian trio are mythical Pokémon with very unique spawn conditions. They are the only legendary Pokémon in Pokémon GO that can spawn in the wild without any special events or items. But make no mistake, their spawn rate is extremely low, so extra patience is required.
Additionally, they are also region-locked.
- Uxie can only be found in Asia and the Pacific
- Mesprit is found in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India.
- Azelf only appears in America and Greenland
If you want to complete this trio, be prepared to either travel the world or diligently trade with players from other regions.
Dusk Form Lycanroc

If you already have Lycanroc, it's most likely in its Midday or Midnight form. What makes it unique is that there's also a Dusk Form Lycanroc, which is much harder to obtain. To obtain it, you'll need to catch or hatch a Rockruff, which has a special evolutionary ability.
How? Keep catching Rockruffs until you find one that can evolve into Dusk. It's a bit tricky and time-consuming, but at least Rockruff isn't a limited-time event Pokémon. So with effort and patience, you still have a chance.
Galarian Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos

This trio of legendary birds from Galar is arguably the rarest encounter in the game. The only way to find them is by using the Daily Adventure Incense, a special item that gives you 15 minutes per day to walk around, hoping to see them.
The problem is, even with incense, their appearance remains extremely rare. Even if they do, catching them is no easy feat. Many players have tried countless times, but these legendary birds quickly flee.
Origin of Dialga and Palkia

Despite the word "forme" in their names, Dialga and Palkia's Origin Formes are actually considered separate Pokémon from their normal counterparts. Both first appeared in the Sinnoh Tour event in February 2024, appearing in five-star raids.
What makes it tricky is that your choice of event path determines which Pokémon are easier to catch. If you choose the Diamond path, you can catch Dialga more easily, while Palkia becomes rarer—and vice versa. Since then, they haven't appeared in any other major events.
Zygarde Complete Form

Most players probably have a regular Zygarde, especially since it's given for free through the From A to Zygarde quest. However, the Complete Form is a much more complicated process.
You'll need to collect Zygarde Cells, which can only be found on Pokémon GO routes (community-created paths). And to transform Zygarde into its Complete Form, you'll need 250 cells! That's assuming you get one cell every time you walk along the route—which isn't always the case. So, be prepared to be tired if you want this form.
Volcarona

This Fire/Bug Pokémon is really cool, but it's surprisingly hard to catch in Pokémon GO. You can't catch it in the wild. The only way to get it is by hatching a Larvesta from a 2km, 5km, or 10km egg.
The problem is, Larvesta's hatch rate is incredibly low. Even if you do manage to get a Larvesta, it takes 400 candies to evolve it into Volcarona. So, if you don't play diligently, there's a good chance Volcarona will end up being a Pokémon you'll only see in other people's Pokédexes.
Rotom

Rotom is a unique Pokémon with many forms (Wash, Heat, Mow, Frost, etc.). However, in Pokémon GO, its appearance is always associated with limited-time events like Go Fest or Go Tour, usually the in-person version. Even the way to obtain it is sometimes odd, such as having to wait for a Rotom photobomb in the Go Snapshot feature.
In 2024, Rotom was slightly easier to obtain through a special code in Go Tour Sinnoh. However, since the event ended, Rotom has reverted to being a rare Pokémon, rarely seen.
Kecleon

Coming in last in the list of the rarest Pokemon in Pokemon Go, there is Kecleon as the final candidate.
This chameleon Pokémon from Gen 3 is one of the most frustrating to hunt. Kecleon can only appear at PokéStops, and even then, it's not always immediately visible. You have to spin the PokéStop and hope for Kecleon to appear before you can catch it.
Because the mechanics are so random, it often takes a long time for players to finally catch a Kecleon. Even if you do find one, don't let your guard down, as it can easily escape.

That's the list of the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon GO, keeping trainers eager to hunt. From Armored Mewtwo, which only appears occasionally, to Kecleon, which likes to hide at PokéStops, all require extra patience.
Whether your goal is to complete your Pokédex or simply show off your rare collection to friends, the most important tip is: never stop exploring. With Niantic constantly releasing new updates and events, who knows, maybe tomorrow it'll be your turn to meet the Pokémon you've been waiting for.
