Its creation existed long before One Piece

Ryuma first appeared as a main character in a one-shot manga by Eiichiro Oda entitled “Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation” in 1994, four years before Oda began serializing One Piece.

Having Blood Relations with Zoro

This is one of the most important facts revealed by Oda in the SBS Volume 105 column.

Oda confirmed that Ryuma is Roronoa Zoro's ancestor. Ryuma is the ancestor of Shimotsuki Furiko, Zoro's grandmother, who married Roronoa Pinzoro. This explains the physical resemblance and incredible swordplay between the two.

Cause of Death

Oda said that Ryuma did not die in battle, but because of the disease he suffered from.

This shows how strong he was during his lifetime, in fact no opponent was able to beat him in a fight.

The Legendary Sword Shusui

His signature sword, Shusui, is one of the 21 best swords in the world. Shusui is known for its incredibly sturdy and heavy blade, capable of withstanding incredible pressure.

What's most interesting is that this sword's blade transformed into a Kokuto (permanent black sword) due to Ryuma's incredibly strong fighting spirit. After being defeated by Zoro at Thriller Bark, Ryuma (in his zombie form) recognized Zoro's strength and honor as a swordsman. As a sign of respect, he then gifted Zoro Shusui.

Zoro then returned this sword to Wano, Ryuma's homeland, as a form of respect.
