The Colossal Titan (or in the manga version written as the 'Colossus Titan') is one of the nine "favorite" titans belonging to the Subjects of Ymir who were "empowered" by the Marley Nation.

It's also the first Titan to appear in both the anime and manga. It's no wonder the Colossal Titan ultimately becomes a sort of "mascot" for the series.

Not only that, the Colossal Titan with its “original” owner, Bertholdt Hoover (it was never clearly stated who the previous heirs were) also plays an important role in the plot.

It is said that the Colossal Titan only appeared in the world after death. Ymir Fritz, as the matriarch of the Titans and also all the Eldians and Subjects of Ymir in the AoT world.

Long story short, after 1800 years from that era, this Titan belonged to one of the Eldian clans who were still at war with each other and were only absolutely subject to the orders of the Titan. Founding Titan.

It was only thanks to the kindness of King Karl Fritz (as the 145th heir to the throne of the Eldian rulers since the time of Ymir) that the war that had raged for 17 centuries ended.

He chose to relocate himself, his family, and the majority of the Eldians to Paradis. Due to the lack of power, the oppressed Marleyans seized the opportunity.

They occupied the throne, rewrote history, and created propaganda: antagonising the Eldians. The once oppressed became the oppressors.

Like it or not, the Eldians who didn't go to Paradis were subjected to segregation and "slavery." Nine Titans fell into Marley's hands, including the Colossal Titan.

It was only in 843 that Bertholdt got the chance to become an Honorary Citizen of Eldia – qualifying to become the next Colossal Titan's "vessel" (and the first in the series).

He first appeared in the 'Fall of Shiganshina' Arc which was witnessed directly by the three main protagonist children of the series, namely Eren Jaeger, Armin Arlelt, and Mikasa Ackerman.

At that moment, Bertholdt used his powers to break through the southern Wall Maria and create a huge hole – making way for the Titans to “feast”.

His actions resulted in numerous human casualties. Of the many Shiganshina residents who died, one of the most tragic was that of Eren and Mikasa's mother.

It was also thanks to this incident that Eren's hatred for Titans (which made him so ambitious to execute Jinarashi that he betrayed Zeke Jaeger) was firmly imprinted in his mind.

Without his actions, Eren might not have hated Titans. He would have become just another citizen of Shiganshina. The Founding Titan's power might never have awakened.

Not only that, it is also ironic because in the end it was Armin (as a victim of Shiganshina's actions) who became the vessel when this Titan fell into Paradis' hands.

Through Armin, the Titan's power can provide the key to victory in many battlefields, both during the attack on Liberio, Ten to Chi no Tatakai, and many more.
