The main controls for the Sony WH-1000XM5 are very similar to the last three iterations of the series, using a capacitive touch panel on the right ear cup.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the WH-1000XM5's left ear cup there are two buttons: the power button and the ANC mode button. Holding down the power button turns on the headphones, and after three seconds starts pairing mode. From there, you can pair in the normal way with a phone, or follow the setup process for a computer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressing the NC\/AMB button will activate the ANC mode. You can choose sound mode ANC, ANC off, or Ambient. The latter lets you hear everything that's happening around you by channeling outside sounds recorded by the microphone array.<\/span><\/p>\n

Standard battery testing yielded a result of 31 hours, 53 minutes with ANC on, slightly better than Sony's advertised 30 hour battery life for the sony wh1000xm5. <\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly, disabling ANC and re-running the test improved results significantly (over 20 hours!), resulting in a total battery life of 53 hours and 6 minutes under the same test conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

In either case, it goes far beyond the usual week-long commute, or long-haul flights. If you're in a bind, just three minutes of charging will provide 180 minutes of playback. Of course, if you don't have a USB-C cable handy, you should always be able to use the handy 3.5mm cable for direct analog playback.<\/span><\/p>\n
